Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by multi-organ dysfunction. Acute respiratory manifestations are typically associated with increased systemic lupus activity, whereas chronic respiratory disease can progress independently of systemic involvement and may persist for a prolonged period. It is often accompanied by muscle weakness, fatigue, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Pulmonary complications, including pneumonia and respiratory failure, along with associated myopathies, can significantly contribute to morbidity. A 47-year-old female diagnosed with SLE developed pneumonia with progressive respiratory distress requiring mechanical ventilation and intensive care. Following medical treatment, she was referred to the pulmonary rehabilitation unit, where a multidisciplinary intervention was used, including physiotherapy, patient education, psychological counseling, and nutritional support. The initiation of structured pulmonary rehabilitation in an acute care setting has been shown to produce notable improvements in respiratory parameters, dyspnea, and functional mobility.
